Fleet Training for business drivers
  • The annual risk of dying in a road accident while driving for business is significantly greater than the risk of dying as a result of all other workplace activities.
  • About a quarter of all vehicle miles traveled annually on Britain ’s roads are for work purposes (Excluding commuting)
  • There are an estimated 3 million company cars on the roads and roughly 1 in 3 will be involved in an accident each year.
  • A staggering 20 fatalities and 250 serious injuries involve drivers on work related driving every week!

Drivers and vehicles play a significant role in any company’s activities and operations. The link between costs and profits because of this are obvious, it is therefore important that not only vehicle maintenance forms part of your costs but the drivers need maintaining also.

The cost of failing to manage these two vital resources could be more costly

Your business may have drivers who are occupational drivers in order for them to do their job. But have you also considered the occasional driver who uses a pool car or their own vehicle to make an occasional errand or infrequent business call.

You must show that people who drive within your business are safe to do so.

Human cost of road crashes is well documented in statistics at local and national level. The hidden costs affect families, friends and colleagues of those involved.

The Highway Code now refers to crashes or collisions rather than an accident which would imply no one was at fault. Crashes involve one of three elements 2% the vehicle, 3% environmental factors, but human error is a contributory factor involved in 95% of crashes.

The driving environment is becoming ever more complex, business demands are keener and indications suggest overall driving standards have not kept pace with advances in vehicle and road design. Each one of these factors is going to make driving in the future even more taxing than it is now.

Statistics show that on average 1 in 5 private motorists make an insurance claim each year, while driving for business it is 1 in 3. Driving for business is a risky activity. There are a number of reasons for this but the human factors such as attitude, fatigue alertness, stress and views on risk taking are significant contributors.

No one is immune to fatigue, stress and the other human factors but the ability to recognise them soon enough will reduce their effect before they significantly increase the risk of a crash.

Effective driver training can reduce the risks and costs of running a fleet of drivers/vehicles and protect your most valuable asset: your staff.
